Gérard FRIEDLANDER

The work of Gérard Friedlander concerns the mechanisms of renal phosphate transport to better understand and treat the consequences of its dysfunction due to kidney disease. Gérard Friedlander began his career in 1980 at the Faculty of Medicine Bichat. His work has initially focused on the experimental study of phosphate homeostasis, which plays a central role in metabolism and cell proliferation, the development and bone mineralization. He then focused his work on the molecular mechanisms underlying the one hand, the syndromes of renal phosphate wasting responsible stones and bone demineralization and, secondly, the progression of chronic kidney disease.

This work is achieved with the intention of identifying susceptibility genes for the development of chronic renal failure and to transfer the results of research for the benefit of the patient in his hospital service. He is currently director of the joint research unit «Growth and signaling» (U845 Inserm / University Paris-Descartes) at Necker Children’s Hospital in Paris, consisting of nine teams. He leads the
«phosphate homeostasis» team, including reviewing the role and mode of action of membrane transporters phosphate (PIT1 and PIT2), with approaches that combine experimental and clinical research.
